The next generation Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is scheduled for launch on January 23, 2019 and will be a big improvement over the current version. An extremely popular seller for its automaker, the new generation Wagon R has been spied a couple of times now, but the latest spy images provide an up close and personal look at the all-new hatchback. The new leaked images showcase the design as well as the cabin on the model, while possibly revealing an all-new engine option as well. Reports suggest that the 2019 Wagon R could debut with the 1.2-litre K-Series four-cylinder petrol engine from the Swift and be specifically offered on the range-topping version. That certainly will be big motor for the tallboy hatchback that has always been offered with the 1.0-litre three-cylinder K-Series motor.
The latest spy images reveal the new generation Maruti Suzuki Wagon R in the top-of-the-line trim. The new split grille is bolder and wider over the predecessor and the headlamps appear to be larger as well. The bumper gets a clutter-free design and incorporates the fog lamps. At the rear, the tall, Volvo-esque taillights are hard to miss and so is the black insert on the C-pillar. Likely to be offered only on the top-end model, the car gets chrome detailing though on the grille, headlamps, fog lamps and the rear defogger. There are still no alloy wheels on offer, on the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R.
Inside, the cabin remains simple and practical on the new generation model much like the current Wagon R. More noticeably, there's a new instrument console with a larger MID unit, a touchscreen infotainment system and audio controls on the three-spoke steering wheel that is gets a brushed silver finish. Expect to get beige themed fabric seats while the dashboard gets a dual-tone brown and beige colour scheme. Expect to see a lot of cubby storage spaces including multiple bottle holders, cup holders and a small space just below the air-con controls. Keeping up with the future safety norms, we expect the new Wagon R to come with dual front airbags and ABS as standard across all trims.
The big change though, if true, will be the 1.2-litre K-Series egine. The engine is capable of churning out 83 bhp and 115 Nm of peak torque, and is a peppy motor in terms of performance. That would be a big step up from the current 1.0-litre mill tuned for 67 bhp and 90 Nm of peak torque. The 1.0-litre motor has been appreciated for its frugal nature and responsiveness, keeping up with the customer's requirements. We reckon, the 1.2 engine will be optional, while the smaller K-Series unit will be the offered on the lower-level trims. It'll be interesting to see how Maruti Suzuki positions the 1.2 petrol motor on the Wagon R, if indeed it is being offered. Transmission options will include the 5-speed manual and an AMT as well.
The 2019 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R won't have it easy as the segment has grown with options. The new hatchback will face heat from the new generation Hyundai Santro, Tata Tiago, Renault Kwid and the recently updated Datsun GO. More details on the Wagon R will be available in the coming weeks. Keep watching this space for all the updates.
