Waymo Gets Go Ahead To Test Driverless Cars Without Backup Driver In California

Alphabet Inc's Waymo unit on Tuesday became the first company to receive a permit from the state of California to test driverless vehicles without a backup driver in the front seat, the state's Department of Motor Vehicles said. California said Waymo can use about three dozen test vehicles without drivers behind the wheel in Santa Clara County, part of the greater technology hub of Silicon Valley.

Although self-driving vehicles are designed to eliminate the need for a driver, most testing thus far has been with a safety driver behind the wheel who can take over in case of emergency. About 60 companies have permits in California to test self-driving cars with such a backup driver, including most major automakers and Apple Inc. New regulations adopted by the state allowing companies to test on public roads without a driver with a special permit took effect in April.

As part of winning approval, Waymo must continuously monitor the status of test vehicles and provide two-way communication with passengers, carry at least $5 million in insurance and notify local communities.

Waymo's permit includes day and night testing on city streets, rural roads and highways with posted speed limits of up to 105 kmph. The company said its vehicles can safely handle fog and light rain, and testing in those conditions is allowed.

Air Quality 'Very Poor', Authorities Urge Delhiites To Use Public Transport For Next 10 Days

As emergency measures to check pollution come into force from Thursday in Delhi-NCR, state pollution control bodies have been directed to initiate criminal prosecution against violators, while the Delhi government said it was fully prepared to implement odd-even scheme to regulate private vehicles when needed. A day after the air quality slipped into 'severe' category, there was a marginal dip in pollution level due to increased wind speed but the air quality still remained 'very poor'.

The Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA), which has restricted several activities like construction from November 1, urged Delhiites on Wednesday to use public transport for the next 10 days when the air quality is likely to deteriorate further.

Noting that private vehicles contribute to 40 per cent pollution in Delhi-NCR, the EPCA urged people to reduce use of private vehicles and completely stop plying diesel vehicles during this period. There are a total of 35 lakh private vehicles in the Delhi NCR region.

An EPCA member had on Tuesday said in case of further deterioration of air quality, they are even contemplating regulating the use of private vehicles from November 1. On its part, the Delhi government on Wednesday said it is "fully prepared" to implement the emergency plan. "The Delhi government is fully prepared to take measures as per Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), including the odd-even scheme are concerned. We will take them when needed," Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said.

In 2016, the odd-even scheme was enforced twice - January 1-15 and April 15-30 in the city when vehicles having odd and even numbers were allowed to ply on alternate days. The GRAP is an emergency plan implemented in phases to combat pollution depending upon the air quality of the city. It came into effect from October 15.

Pitching in, Delhi Metro announced that it has introduced 21 additional trains on its network with effect from Wednesday which will provide 812 additional number of trips to passengers using public transport.

This includes 14 trains with 730 trips of Trilokpuri-Sanjay Lake to Shiv Vihar section of Line-7 also which has been thrown open to public from Wednesday.

The EPCA's call to public comes as the city's air quality deteriorated in the last two weeks with the pollution reaching severe levels on Tuesday, prompting authorities to issue a slew of directions including ban construction activities along with halting operations of industries using coal and biomass as fuel between November 1 and 10.

From Thursday, there will be a halt of all construction activities involving excavation. Civil construction will remain closed in Delhi and other NCR districts, besides closure of all stone crushers, hot mix plants generating dust pollution in Delhi and NCR districts, according to a Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) order.

The DPCC has also directed the transport department and traffic police to intensify checking of polluting vehicles and control travel congestion in Delhi and other NCR districts during November 1-10.

"Ensure that we do not burn garbage and we report all instances of garbage burning and other pollution carefully and responsibly on the CPCB Facebook/Twitter accounts," the EPCA said Wednesday.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has directed the state pollution control bodies of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi to start criminal prosecution against agencies or individuals who do not comply with directives to check air pollution.

The overall air quality index of Delhi on Wednesday was recorded at 366 by the CPCB. An official with the Centre-run System of Air Quality Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) said the improvement in air quality can be attributed to increased speed of early morning winds.

"Early morning winds picked up, which came as respite and dispersed particles rapidly and pulled back air quality towards very poor range," the official said.

SAFAR further said the AQI for next two days would remain in "very poor" range but with increasing trend. "Air quality is likely to deteriorate on November 3 as a result of post westerly disturbances which are likely to hit over Western Himalayas today," SAFAR said. "Stubble fire count increased but as upper wind speed is slow it will only impact Delhi air marginally. Surface winds are again turning to be calm and favourable for stagnation," it said.

Gurgaon recorded "severe" air quality at 416, while it was "very poor" in Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida and Greater Noida.

Ten areas in Delhi recorded "severe" air quality while 23 areas recorded "very poor" air quality, according to the CPCB data.

CPCB Chairperson S P Singh Parihar has also issued directions to construction agencies, municipal corporations and land owning industries to comply with the directions of the NGT and the CPCB and ensure corrective actions within 48 hours in cases of air polluting activities as reported by the CPCB inspection teams.

"Failure to which will make the defaulting agencies and individuals liable to criminal prosecution which may be initiated by the CPCB under appropriate provision of the law," Parihar said in the letter. Complying with the Supreme Court directions, the CPCB has also put up guidelines for public to file complaints on air pollution in Delhi NCR on its social media accounts, CPCB website and also through an app developed by it called Sameer app.

Honda And GAC Group To Build $430 Million Chinese Plant For New-Energy Cars

Honda Motor Co's joint venture with GAC Group will invest 3.27 billion yuan ($469 million) in new-energy vehicle production in China, GAC said in a stock exchange filing on Wednesday. The move is part of Honda and GAC's push to meet China's stringent green car quotas. The Honda-GAC joint venture will build a new plant with capacity to produce 170,000 new-energy vehicles a year, the filing said. New-energy vehicles include all electric battery cars as well as plug-in hybrid vehicles.

A source close to the joint venture said that the plan envisages Japan's Honda producing GAC's Trumpchi GS4, a battery powered compact SUV, to sell through Honda outlets operated with GAC.

The Honda-produced car is likely to be sold with the Trumpchi badge rather than Honda's, the source said, declining to be named because he is not authorized to speak on the matter.

It is a highly unusual arrangement but provides a quick way to meet Beijing's requirements for such vehicles to represent 10 percent of an auto manufacturer's production by 2019.

The deal is similar to an earlier one between Toyota Motor Corp and its local partner. Toyota showrooms will sell an electric vehicle without the Japanese company's distinctive triple-oval logo. Instead, it will feature the label of its Chinese partner GAC and be built using GAC's lower-cost technology.

Sales Stay Flat As Market Pressures Hit Maruti In October 2018

Maruti Suzuki India Limited sold a total of 146,766 units in October 2018. This includes 138,100 units in domestic market and 8,666 units of exports. Sales of the company stayed flat and saw a marginal growth of 0.2 per cent compared to the same period last year. The company last year had shown a 9.3 per cent growth during the month of Dussehra;  however, it could not replicate that growth this time around. Maruti Suzuki's sales have been growing marginally and it looks like the beginning of the festive season has not brought in the  numbers for the company.

The Alto and WagonR continued to post positive sales for the company with that segment growing by 1.1 per cent. The new generation Swift and the even the Dzire raked in good sales too with the compact segment growing by 3.7 per cent.

Another segment which saw a massive decline was the Utility vehicles segment. The Vitara Brezza has championed this segment for the company for a long time now and it has even helped the company become one of the leading UV manufacturing in the country. Sales in the UV segment dropped by a massive 11.2 per cent and it is the biggest drop seen in the recent past.

Exports for the company too dropped by 17 per cent in October 2018 with just 8666 units being exported compared to 10446 units in October 2017.

Next-Gen Toyota Camry Spotted Testing In India

Images of the next-generation Toyota Camry have recently surfaced online in its near-production guise. The new Camry is already on sale in the global markets, and sighting of the car in India indicates that Toyota might be considering launching the car in India, possibly in 2019. Interestingly this is not the first time that a test mule of the eight-gen Toyota Camry has been spotted in India, but like the previous one, the latest mule also comes with some heavy camouflage.

New Toyota Camry is already on sale in the global markets

Unlike the previously seen prototype model of the new Toyota Camry, this time around we also get a closer look at the front section of the car. Despite the camouflage, we can see the outlines of the car's signature design lines and the large front grille. The exposed bits also reveal the sharp-looking headlamps which come with LED project lights and LED daytime running lamps as well. The car runs on a set of multi-spoke alloy wheels, sleeker ORVMs, and wraparound LED taillamps at the rear.

New Toyota Camry will also come in hybrid format

Based on the exhaust pipe, this particular car appears to be the hybrid model, which is understandable considering the outgoing Camry in India is also offered only in a hybrid format. Other exterior elements visible in these images include the new sleek taillamps, and chrome door handles. The all-new 2018 Toyota Camry will be the latest model from the automaker to be based on the TNGA modular platform.

Under the hood, the new-gen Toyota Camry will get a 2.5-litre petrol engine on the standard version, while the Hybrid model will continue to use the 2.5-litre petrol with Atkinson cycle engine, paired to an electric motor. Both versions will come paired to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The US model will also get the 3.5-litre V6 petrol motor, which won't be making its way to India.

Tata Motors Reveals Turnaround Plan For Jaguar Land Rover After Loss

India's Tata Motors Ltd on Wednesday announced a turnaround plan for its luxury car unit Jaguar Land Rover which has been hit hard by trade tensions between China and the US, low demand for diesel cars in Europe and worries over Brexit. Under "Project Charge" Tata Motors said it plans to cut costs and improve cash flows at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) by 2.5 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) over 18 months. JLR also plans to launch several new vehicles including the Jaguar I-Pace and the new Range Rover Defender over the next few years and will offer a hybrid or electric version of all its models by 2020.

"Together with our ongoing product offensive and calibrated investment plans, these efforts will lay the foundations for long-term sustainable growth," JLR CEO Ralf Speth said after Tata Motors reported a loss for the second-quarter.

JLR has trimmed its pre-tax profit expectations for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2019 and expects to break even, Speth said, versus an earlier target of profit growth.

As part of the turnaround plan, JLR will first focus on cash saving "quick wins" like reducing non-product investments and speeding up asset sales, Tata Motors said in an investor presentation.

In the near term it will improve efficiency in areas including purchasing and material cost, manufacturing and logistics and people and will focus on strategic and non-core asset sales. JLR has already reduced the number of production days at its UK plants in Castle Bromwich and Solihull.

The company said in its presentation it has saved 300 million pounds since it initiated the turnaround plan six weeks ago and is working on 500 ideas for the future.

Tata Motors made a loss of 10.49 billion rupees ($141.9 million) for the July-September quarter, compared with a profit of 24.83 billion rupees in the year-ago period. That was worse than the estimate of a loss of 2.40 billion rupees, according to Refinitiv data.

JLR reported a loss of 101 million pounds during the quarter and its margin on earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell 130 basis points to 9.9 percent.

Retail sales of its Jaguar saloons and Land Rover sport utility vehicles (SUVs) fell 13.2 percent to about 130,000 units, hurt particularly by tariff changes in China and escalating trade tensions.

Demand in China remained muted even after the country cut import tariffs for cars and car parts to 15 percent for most vehicles from 25 percent from July.

Tata Motors' domestic business reported a profit of 1.09 billion rupees and EBITDA margin rose 210 basis points to 8.7 percent during the quarter from a year ago. The automaker incurred a one-off charge of 4.37 billion rupees due to the closure of operations at its Thailand-based subsidiary.

Upcoming Jawa 300 Motorcycle Spotted Testing Ahead Of Unveil Next Month

Czech motorcycle brand Jawa is all set to make its comeback to the Indian market and the bike maker has earmarked November 15, 2018, as its big day. Ahead of the official unveil next month, the first test mule of Jawa's upcoming 300 motorcycle has been spied on road and it does keep the retro body very much intact, under all that camouflage. While little is known about the motorcycle including its name, Jawa has revealed details on the engine that will power the new motorcycle. It is likely that there will be more than one bike powered by the 300 cc engine from the brand.

The new Jawa 300 cc motorcycle spied certainly looks like it is preparing to take on the Royal Enfield Classic 350. The retro-styling looks very much in-line with the classic Jawas. Small details like the chain case, rear suspension cover and the single-round headlight are all retro and bring the vintage feel to the otherwise modern bike. The fuel tank also appears to be large, which should make for an respectable touring range. The twin-cylinder engine is the same as the one unveiled in images earlier this year and fits rather well.

While details haven't been revealed yet, the Jawa 300 motorcycle is likely to feature telescopic forks up front and a gas charged twin shocks at the rear. The bike also sports a front disc brake while the rear gets a drum brake setup. The bike rides on what look like 18-inch spoke wheels with MRF tyres. It's not confirmed if ABS will be available at the time of launch, which we hope is the case.

With respect to the powertrain, the upcoming Jawa bike will be using the 293 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine tuned to produce 27 bhp and 28 Nm of peak torque. The motor will be paired with a 6-speed gearbox.

The Jawa brand is owned Classic Legends Private Limited, which in turn is owned by the Mahindra Group. The company is eyeing the premium motorcycle market with the Jawa brand, which will be sold alongside the Mahindra Mojo. Prices are expected to be in the vicinity of Rs. 1.5-1.75 lakh (ex-showroom). More details on the brand's positioning, sales and marketing will be available in a fortnight from now. We will be bringing you complete details soon, so stay tuned!

Eicher Motors Says Labour Strife Hurt Royal Enfield Production

India's Eicher Motors Ltd said on Wednesday strike at one of its southern Indian facility led to a slump in production of 25,000 motorcycles in September-October, after a part of its workforce "stayed away" from work.

Workers at the facility of Eicher Motors, best known for its Royal Enfield motorcycles, saw a part of their workforce walkout last month demanding higher pay, job security and a right to form unions to collectively bargain.

The facility in Oragadam, situated in Tamil Nadu, remained operational through October, and a majority of the workforce continues to report to work, Eicher said.

Tata Motors Posts Second-Quarter Loss On Weak JLR Sales

Retail sales of its Jaguar saloons and Land Rover sport utility vehicles (SUVs) fell 13.2 percent, hurt particularly due to tariff changes in China and escalating trade tensions between the Asian nation and the US.

While specifications on the India-spec model haven't been revealed yet, the international-spec Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R is powered by a 636 cc in-line four-cylinder engine tuned for 126 bhp and 70.6 Nm of peak torque. The motor comes paired with a 6-speed transmission with slipper clutch, and comes with a host of goodies including the KIBS (Kawasaki intelligent anti-lock braking system), Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC), two power modes, ABS and upshift only Kawasaki Quick Shifter (KQS). The bike competes in the middleweight supersport segment globally against the likes of the Yamaha YZF-R6, Suzuki GSX-R600, Triumph Daytona 675 and the likes. In India though, the ZX-6R does not have a direct competition, but will compete against the Ducati 959 Panigale, and the Triumph Street Triple RS, which are available in the same price bracket.

The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R will be assembled at the manufacturer's facility in Chakan, near Pune, and prices are expected in the vicinity of Rs. 11-12 lakh (ex-showroom, Introductory). If the ZX-6R manages to crack the middleweight supersport segment, it just might encourage other manufacturers to explore this space.

Exclusive: Land Rover To Begin Assembling The Range Rover Velar In India

The Range Rover Velar will soon be locally made by Jaguar Land Rover India. Sources have shared with carandbike that the Tata Group company will begin local assembly of CKD kits (completely knocked down kits) at its plant outside Pune by January 2019. The luxury SUV is one of 4 Range Rover models and sits between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. Making the car locally will result in a likely reduction in its prices, while it will also mean the variant mix is likely to also be reduced. The car is currently available in a whopping 25 variants across petrol and diesel, with a wide variety of trim levels on offer. That will be reduced, and the First Edition variant is also likely to go off the market. Prices are expected to come down by approximately Rs. 10-14 lakh depending on variant and engine specification. This means the car is expected to then see the range begin at roughly Rs. 65-70 lakh ex-showroom. The Range Rover Velar currently starts at Rs. 83.34 lakh and tops off at Rs. 1.45 Crore.

range rover velar all terrain systemThe car is currently available in a whopping 25 variants across petrol and diesel.

We saw similar moves when the Jaguar F-Pace moved to local assembly too, with prices coming down. The F-Pace now starts at Rs 63.17 lakh, and its local production began in 2017. Prior to that, five other models from the JLR stable had moved to CKD operations. These are the Jaguar XJ in 2014, the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport in 2015, the Jaguar XE in 2016, and the new XF sedan stayed with CKD when it was introduced in 2017 too. The previous generation XF and Land Rover Freelander2 had also been built locally at Pune in the past. After the Range Rover Velar moves to being locally built, the next model expected to follow suit is the Land Rover Discovery. That is expected to happen around mid-2019. Its prices currently start at Rs. 74.95 lakh (ex-showroom) since it is a completely built-up (CBU) import only at this time. We have reached out to JLR India for a comment but are yet t receive a response on our query.

Ducati MIG-RR Electric Bike To Debut At EICMA 2019

Ducati will unveil its new electric bike, the Ducati MIG-RR, at the upcoming EICMA show in Milan in early November. The MIG-RR is an exclusive model created in collaboration with well-known European electric bike manufacturer Thok e-bikes. The MIG-RR's design has been created in collaboration with celebrated Italian designer Aldo Drudi with support from the Ducati Style Centre. For now, the Ducati MIG-RR will be unveiled at the EICMA show, with sales in Europe beginning in the spring of 2019. Interested customers can also order the MIG-RR from the Ducati official website from January 2019.

utj6f03

The Ducati MIG-RR will allow riders to tackle climbs with ease, thanks to the electric motor

Clearly, Ducati is keen to join the electric mountain bike space, which is slowly and quite rapidly growing around the world. The MIG-RR is powered by a Shimano Steps E8000 engine, Renthal carbon fibre handlebar, four-piston Shimano Saint brake calipers, Mavic wheels and 11-speed gears, also from Shimano. The 504 Wh battery is located under the lower tube to have a low centre of gravity, and to improve stability and riding precision. The Ducati MIG-RR also has FOX Factory Karishma suspension, with 170 mm of travel on the 29-inch front wheel, and the rear has 160 mm of travel with a 27.5-inch wheel.

8un15kgg

The Ducati MIG-RR will be on sale in Europe from 2019. No word on availability in India, yet.

The MIG-RR is an electric mountain bike that will allow the rider to tackle climbs that will be difficult without the help of the electric engine, and to have an off-road and endure experience on a relatively lightweight mountain bike. The Ducati MIG-RR has all those elements and real off-road mountain bike capability, thanks to the expertise of Thok E-bikes, born out of the passion of Stefano Migliorini, one of the greatest Italian MTB riders of the 1990s. It is still unclear if Ducati will consider launching the MIG-RR in India, a market which has seen growing interest in cycling and mountain bikes, but the electric mountain bike space is still relatively unheard of in India, the world's largest two-wheeler market.

Google Spinoff To Test Truly Driverless Cars In California

The robotic car company created by Google is poised to attempt a major technological leap in California, where its vehicles will hit the roads without a human on hand to take control in emergencies.

The regulatory approval announced Tuesday allows Waymo's driverless cars to cruise through California at speeds up to 65 miles per hour.

The self-driving cars have traveled millions of miles on the state's roads since Waymo began as a secretive project within Google nearly a decade ago. But a backup driver had been required to be behind the wheel until new regulations in April set the stage for the transition to true autonomy.

Waymo is the first among dozens of companies testing self-driving cars in California to persuade state regulators its technology is safe enough to permit them on the roads without a safety driver in them. An engineer still must monitor the fully autonomous cars from a remote location and be able to steer and stop the vehicles if something goes wrong.

California, however, won't be the first state to have Waymo's fully autonomous cars on its streets. Waymo has been giving rides to a group of volunteer passengers in Arizona in driverless cars since last year. It has pledged to deploy its fleet of fully autonomous vans in Arizona in a ride-hailing service open to all comers in the Phoenix area by the end of this year.

But California has a much larger population and far more congestion than Arizona, making it even more challenging place for robotic cars to get around.

Waymo is moving into its next phase in California cautiously. To start, the fully autonomous cars will only give rides to Waymo's employees and confine their routes to roads in its home town of Mountain View, California, and four neighboring Silicon Valley cities - Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, and Palo Alto.

If all goes well, Waymo will then seek volunteers who want to be transported in fully autonomous vehicles, similar to its early rider program in Arizona . That then could lead to a ride-hailing service like the one Waymo envisions in Arizona.

But Waymo's critics are not convinced there is enough evidence that the fully autonomous cars can be trusted to be driving through neighborhoods without humans behind the wheel.

"This will allow Waymo to test its robotic cars using people as human guinea pigs," said John Simpson, privacy and technology project director for Consumer Watchdog, a group that has repeatedly raised doubts about the safety of self-driving cars.

Those concerns escalated in March after fatal collision involving a self-driving car being tested by the leading ride-hailing service, Uber. In that incident, an Uber self-driving car with a human safety driver struck and killed a pedestrian crossing a darkened street in a Phoenix suburb.

Waymo's cars with safety drivers have been involved in dozens of accidents in California, but those have mostly been minor fender benders at low speeds.

All told, Waymo says its self-driving cars have collectively logged more than 10 million miles in 25 cities in a handful of states while in autonomous mode, although most of those trips have occurred with safety drivers.

Waymo contends its robotic vehicles will save lives because so many crashes are caused by human motorists who are intoxicated, distracted or just bad drivers.

"If a Waymo vehicle comes across a situation it doesn't understand, it does what any good driver would do: comes to a safe stop until it does understand how to proceed," the company said Tuesday.

It's all about enhancing your experience and that's what we at Bentley are always striving to do."

"We at Bentley, are always looking at the evolving technologies and yes connected cars and autonomous technology require a lot of software updation. We are not however, looking at developing autonomous technology just yet. We will cater to the customers' needs and wants and of course, if there's a strong demand, we will be ready."

F1: This Is How Will Smith Congratulated Lewis Hamilton's 5th F1 World Championship

The 2018 Mexican Formula Grand Prix turned out to be the championship decider of the season with Lewis Hamilton taking his fifth world title. The Mercedes driver finished fourth in the Mexican GP securing enough points to beat title rival Sebastian Vettel. The 33-year-old has equalled his world titles as that of the great Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio, while the legend Michael Schumacher's seven time world championship is suddenly within reach. Amidst all the celebrations, the F1 world champion received an unexpected message on team radio from a certain celebrity congratulating him on his win.

Also Read: F1: Hamilton Takes 5th World Title As Verstappen Wins Mexican GP

The Mercedes team radio played a pre-recorded message from Hollywood superstar Will Smith on the radio, congratulating Hamilton. In the most Bad Boy fashion, Smith said, "Hey, Lewis. Congrats, man. That's how you do it, baby. Just like I taught you, that's how you do it. Just like that, that's how you're supposed to drive."

The lines are in reference to his famous dialogue from the 1995 super-hit buddy cop movie Bad Boys, but fit quite apt her too. The pre-recorded message did leave a lot of people in splits, while there certain fans who weren't too happy about the Men In Black star taking over the radio, in what was supposed to be team moment.

Nevertheless, Hamilton clearly took the wishes and the joke well, and later took to his Twitter handle to share Smith's congratulatory video too.

The Mexican GP unfolded with much drama as Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, who was at pole had a premature end to his race in a plume of smoke, just 10 laps from the chequered flag. Meanwhile, teammate Max Verstappen won the race, having started second on the grid. Title contender Vettel took the second place in the Mexican GP, but had to win this race to keep the fight going for the final two rounds.

With the championship under his belt for the fifth time, Hamilton has time and again proved his mettle behind the F1 car, also being the most consistent driver on the grid, even when he did not have the fastest car on the race track. With the stakes much higher now, will the Briton be able to match Schumacher's championship wins. We certainly hope to find out in the next seasons.

Delhi Pollution: Use Of Private Cars Could Be Banned If Smog Becomes Worse

India may halt the use of private vehicles in the capital New Delhi if air pollution, which has reached severe levels in recent days, gets worse, a senior environmental official said on Tuesday.

Toxic smog has started to envelop vast swathes of northern India, including New Delhi, as it does each year when winter approaches and farmers burn off the residue of crops.

"Let us hope the air pollution situation in Delhi doesn't deteriorate but if it turns out to be an emergency, we will have to stop the use of private transport," said Bhure Lal, chairman of the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA). "There is a committee which will advise me on this."

EPCA, appointed by the Supreme Court, has already proposed halting construction, the use of diesel-run power generators, brick kilns and the burning of garbage between Nov. 1 and Nov. 10 when pollution levels are expected to rise.

Data from the Central Pollution Control Board showed the air quality index, which measures the concentration of poisonous particulate matter, hit 469 in parts of Delhi on Tuesday, up from 299.4 a week ago.

Crop stubble burning, a major source of pollution, vehicular exhaust and a drop-off in wind speeds have aggravated the smog that is likely to worsen around Nov. 7, when fireworks will set off to celebrate the major Hindu festival of Diwali.

As a blanket of haze settled over the area, the leaders of Aam Aadmi Party governing Delhi and a central government minister sparred over what to do.

"Every year Delhi suffers because of the ineptness of the central government and the state governments of neighbouring Punjab and Haryana states," Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said in a tweet.

Farmers in Punjab and Haryana states, India's bread basket, start burning the residue of the previous crop to prepare for new plantings in November.

Defending the central government, Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan said his ministry and the state governments of Punjab and Haryana have tried to reduce stubble burning and the Delhi government must intensify its own efforts to help curb pollution.

Moreover, there is also a two years free extended warranty and a finance option of 3.99 per cent available on the Kwid.

Renault has recently given a feature update to the Kwid and now it comes loaded with some first-in-segment features like rear parking camera and rear-seat centre armrest along with three-point seatbelts at the rear which was a crucial thing missing on the Kwid.

The Renault Kwid comes in two iterations- a 0.8-litre 3-cylinder, petrol motor that develops 54 bhp and and 72 Nm of peak torque and slightly more powerful a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder, petrol engine that produces 67 bhp and 91 Nm of torque. While the 0.8-litre engine is only mated to a five-speed manual transmission, the 1.0-litre Kwid also gets the option of a five-speed AMT gearbox.

Renault Duster:

Renault Duster was the brand that established Renault as a big player in the Indian market. The sales of the Duster picked-up well in 2012 when it was launched but over time the rise in competition saw the sales of the Duster take a plunge. Renault is offering attractive discounts on the Duster this festive season, in a bid to revive its sales.

Renault is offering Rs. 60,000 cash discount for the manual Renault Duster while Rs. 40,000 cash discount is available on the automatic variant along with free insurance on both the variants. Only the diesel Renault Duster is under discount and there are no offers on the petrol iteration.

The diesel Renault Duster which is on sale now is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel motor that churns out 110 bhp and 245 Nm of peak torque and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission as standard while a six-speed AMT is also optional. The petrol Renault Duster is also powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine which produces 106 bhp and 142 Nm of peak torque. This engine also is mated to a six-speed manual transmission as standard while an X-Tronic CVT is also available as an option.

Renault Lodgy:

The Renault Lodgy is one of the most fuel efficient MPVs on sale in India, however that strength hasn't helped it much in sales. With the launch of the Mahindra Marazzo, things are going to get difficult for the Lodgy. However, it's a practical car and Renault is currently selling the Lodgy only in the top-notch Stepway variant and is offering Rs. 60,000 cash discount on the model along with free insurance.

The Lodgy Stepway is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine that produces 110 bhp and 245 Nm of peak torque. This engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard.

2018 Hyundai Santro: No More A Real Tall Boy

The 'Tall Boy' lingo has always been associated with the Hyundai Santro ever since it was launched in 1998. A year down the line, the Korean carmaker started calling it the 'real' tall boy. Perhaps that was to answer Maruti Suzuki which launched the WagonR in 1999 and was also marketing it using the same adjective. Agreed that Hyundai was the pioneer, but the WagonR was taller by a good 100 mm. Fast-forward to 2018, Hyundai is still claiming that the Santro is a tall boy but the figures tell us otherwise. The new Santro has grown horizontally but it's a different story altogether when it comes to the height.

Also Watch: 2018 Hyundai #Santro Review

The height of the 2018 Hyundai Santro has been reduced by 30 mm compared to the Santro Xing which was discontinued in 2014. The new Hyundai Santro stands 1560 mm tall while the Santro Xing was 1590 mm in height. Besides, the new angular design language and a slightly sloping roof-line very well deceive the tall boy stance of the new Santro. That said, the new Hyundai Santro at 3610 mm is longer by 45 mm than the predecessor and we are not complaining about the sense of space inside. The legroom is class leading in its segment and headroom is ample; something we've talked about in our review at length. Even the design is winsome and purposeful, just that it's no more tall-boyish in silhouette.

Overall, certain design elements on the new Hyundai Santro do catch attention. For starters, the new smiling face carries the cascade family design and the wide black grille with chrome fringes looks adorable.  The character lines on either sides of the bonnet enhances the muscles in a subtle manner but we feel that the boomerang shaped design element just after the front fender doesn't really add much to the overall design. The rear of the new Hyundai Santro looks comparatively edgy compared to its face, however, the tail lamps could have done with a better design.

The new Santro is based on Hyundai's all-new K1 platform which the company claims is lighter and 63 per cent more rigid than the previous platform making it robust enough to meet the upcoming safety standards. carandbike had also exclusively reported that this new platform will underpin all the upcoming sub-compact models in the Hyundai line-up including the Vitara Brezza rivalling sub-four meter SUV (codename QX1) and next-generation Grand i10 which is under testing.

Moto Corsa 2000 cc Naked Bike

A motorcycle dealer in the UK, called Moto Corsa, is developing a 2000 cc naked bike, called the Moto Corsa 2K. The dealership has joined hands with T3 Racing, a performance outfit which develops race-spec machines for road and track. And the result is the creation of the Moto Corsa 2K, a naked street motorcycle with bespoke design and high-end components, boasting of a huge 2,000 km v-twin engine, actually a 1961 cc v-twin engine designed by S&S, which puts out 100 bhp of power and 183 Nm of peak torque and mated to a five-speed transmission.

The Moto Corsa 2K uses a massive 1,961 cc, v-twin engine from S&S

The Moto Corsa 2K has been developed by T3 Racing and the latest pictures of the prototype shows that it's indeed an impressive machine. The big S&S v-twin is usually used in big cruisers, and it's probably the first time that a naked street will get the same large displacement engine. The running gear is of high quality as well, with carbon Dymag wheels, Ohlins suspension and Beringer brakes. The prototype contains many body panels which are now built out of plastic, and once production begins these parts will be replaced by actual carbon fibre parts and panels.

Despite the top-spec components and modern design, the Moto Corsa 2K is an air-cooled engine, although additional cooling methods to keep engine heat from the massive v-twin at bay are reportedly still under development. The clientele for such a bike will be the discerning buyer who will be looking for something exclusive, powerful and of course, expensive. Only 20 bikes will be built, each of which will sell for around $ 51,200 (over Rs. 37.7 lakh in current exchange rates).

EICMA 2018: Royal Enfield Teases Bobber Motorcycle

Royal Enfield will be showing off a bobber-style motorcycle at the 2018 EICMA motorcycle show. In fact, Royal Enfield has put up a teaser image on its Instagram handle of the new motorcycle under black wraps and has not revealed any details except the fact that the new bike will be revealed on 6th November, 2018. Barely a few days away, EICMA is the biggest two-wheeler expo in the world and every year there are some beautiful two-wheeled machines on display. At last year's edition of EICMA, Royal Enfield had taken the wraps off the 650 twins.

If you look at the motorcycle under the wraps, you will see that the silhouette of the motorcycle is quite similar to that of the Triumph Bonneville Bobber and seems to have a cantilevered seat which is somewhat similar to the spring seats found on the Royal Enfield Classic 350 and the Classic 500 as well. Other details that one can make out are the alloy wheels and a flat, wide handlebar with the instrument console protruding above the handlebar line. There is no mistaking the retro-styling on the motorcycle but there seems to be a modern bit in the form of an LED DRL ring on the round headlamp up front.

What about the engine and the platform, you ask? From the silhouette, it looks to be one of the 'Classic' models from Royal Enfield. Unfortunately, it is impossible to make out which engine the bike is carrying, thanks to the cover. To be honest, we will not be surprised if the bike turned out to be a custom bobber interpretation based on the new 650 cc Twins too. No matter what the bike is, under the wraps, it looks delectable and we cannot wait for it to be unveiled in a week's time at the 2018 EICMA motorcycle show.

Upcoming Bike Launches In November 2018

We are entering the penultimate month of 2018, and while you would be right to say that the year has passed us quicker than ever, it's also brought some very interesting motorcycles to the table. The month of November promises to be no different - if anything only bigger with three highly anticipated launches planned. All motorcycles interestingly are all about making us nostalgic with their retro vibe and old-school design. There's also a small capacity rocket possibly slated for launch from a certain Austrian bike maker. Here's a look at the three motorcycle launches confirmed in November this year.

Royal Enfield Interceptor 650: November 13-15

(The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is expected to be priced around Rs. 2.7 lakh (ex-showroom))

Possibly one of the biggest launches of the 2018, the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 marks a new chapter for the bike maker that aims to go global with its all-new offerings. The Interceptor 650 is the one-half of the new 650 twins and boast of a completely new platform, engine and mechanicals. The Interceptor 650 also resurrects the motorcycle name from the 1960s, while 649 cc parallel-twin motor tuned for 47 bhp and 52 Nm of peak torque. Now, we've ridden the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 already on the sunny highways of California, and the bike certainly is promising with a claimed top speed of 160 kmph. The new 650 will also mark significant improvements in quality for the brand, which it says will be on point right from the start. Pricing remains a major deciding factor on the Interceptor 650, and is expected to start at about Rs. 2.70 lakh (ex-showroom), making for highly aggressive pricing. More details on the prices and availability will be available between November 13-15.

(Together with the Interceptor 650, the Continental GT 650 could disrupt the middleweight segment)

The second half of Royal Enfield's 650 twins, the Continental GT 650 shares its underpinnings and powertrain with the Interceptor 650, but gets a completely different design and style. The motorcycle takes the shape of a cafe racer with the tear-drop fuel tank, clip-on handlebars, single-seat and more. Both bikes share the same cycle parts and weigh quite similar too. However, the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 sets itself apart with the more aggressive styling and power to go with the same. Both motorcycles will come with dual-channel ABS as standard and will also get a slipper-clutch, the latter being a first for any Royal Enfield. The Continental GT 650 is expected to be slightly more expensive than the Interceptor 650.

Jawa Motorcycle - November 15

mahindra jawa bike

(Jawa will be unveiling its all-new motorcycle next month and also announce future plans)

Mahindra Group is all set to resurrect the iconic Jawa brand and eat into Royal Enfield's share of the pie with its upcoming 300 cc retro-styled motorcycle. Jawa motorcycles discontinued in the 1990s in India, but have left a plethora of owners, collectors and aficionados wanting more from the Czech manufacturer. The new motorcycle from Jawa for India is expected to take on the Royal Enfield Classic 350, and is likely to be inspired from the yesteryear bikes. That said, details on the engine have already been revealed with the 293 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor tuned to produce 27 bhp and 28 Nm of peak torque. The motor will come paired with a 6-speed transmission. With the popularity of retro motorcycles, Jawa's new offering is expected to be accepted well into today's two-wheeler eco-system that appreciates classic designs with modern underpinnings. Prices are expected to be around Rs. 1.5 lakh (ex-showroom), while Mahindra's two-wheeler dealership base is likely to be used to retail the new offering. More details will be available at the time of launch on November 15, so stay tuned!

KTM 125 Duke

The surprise launch of the  month, speculations are rife that KTM India will introduce the 125 Duke in the country sometime in November this year. Dealerships are also accepting bookings for the KTM 125 Duke for a token amount of Rs. 1000, even though the bike maker is yet to officially confirm the same. If the 125 Duke indeed hits the market next month, it will be the most affordable KTM to go on sale in India while carrying a hefty price tag for a 125 cc motorcycle. The KTM 125 Duke shares its design language with that of the 390 Duke, while boasting a 124.7 cc single-cylinder engine with fuel injection tuned for 14 bhp and 11.8 Nm of peak torque. With ABS being mandatory for two-wheelers over 125 cc, the 200 Duke will move on the price bracket, which will make thee 125 Duke (with CBS as standard) a more affordable entry to the KTM brand. Prices are expected to be around Rs. 1.2 lakh (ex-showroom), pitching the model against the Bajaj Pulsar NS 200, Yamaha FZ 25, Yamaha R15 V3.0 and more.
